Penny Bollinger and Terry Hanvey from Chula Vista California have joined Gilbert Rotary.

They have a charity called Learning tools for Global Schools.

Learning Tools for Global Schools was established as a nonprofit charity in 2009 by Founder and CEO, Penny Bollinger. She noted an overlooked area in most charitable efforts. In several countries there seems to be no continuing program to ensure that schools have basic school supplies. Frequently students have no notebooks in which to practice writing and at times two students may have to share a stub of a pencil as their only writing tool. Our purpose is to provide these basic supplies.

As mentioned, they have been doing this work since 2009 and long before they joined Rotary. Education for kids is a passion for them. When they joined Rotary, in Chula Vista, they found an organization of like-minded servants willing to help. These people they help want to be taught to be self-sufficient. A lot of governments have stopped charities from visiting because they don’t really want monetary assistance, they want to learn how to do things themselves. They run on an approximately $10,000 budget and because of 501C3 in California they can only donate 10% of their own money. Their travel, food and hotel is also not covered, 90% of donations have to come from fundraising and donations. The project in Mexico was also mentioned in the May issue of The Rotarian Magazine. We are so fortunate to have Penny and Terry choose our club. We look forward to working with them and hearing their vision and perspective. For more information: www.learningtoolsforglobalschools.org
