Rotary Youth Exchange
Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a program for high school students ages 15-18 who have an interest in studying abroad. You can learn all about the RYE program by exploring this website. Photos and stories from recent exchange students will hopefully get you excited about the possibility of becoming, or hosting, a youth exchange student in the near future. Participating in this top-rated youth exchange program often builds international friendships that last a lifetime!
Our district typically awards 6 to 8 RYE Scholarships to qualifying Arizona high school students each year. A RYE Scholarship covers room, board, tuition and a monthly stipend for the student’s year abroad. When a Rotary club sponsors a local “outbound” Rotary Youth Exchange student scholar, it is committed to hosting an inbound foreign exchange student for the same school year.
The sponsoring/host club is also in charge of designating a club Youth Exchange Officer and a volunteer Student Counselor. The club and the outbound student usually work together in locating 2-3 quality families for hosting the coming inbound student for a portion of their stay.
Gilbert Rotary has been active in this program and after a recent hiatus sponsored outgoing Rotary Exchange Student Ryan Dellolio to Japan and accepted incoming Rotary Exchange Student Rumi Izumiya from Japan. Ryan recently returned from Japan where he had a “life-changing year”. Rumi, as well recently returned home to Japan after a year-long stay with us. We are so privileged to have them both. Gilbert Rotary is sponsoring another inbound student in 2016-17.
