Gilbert Rotary welcomed David Pullman, counselor at the East Valley Institute of Technology to speak to our club about “all things EVIT”.
Presenting Abigail Pendleton as Gilbert Rotary and EVIT’s Student of the Month was a perfect segway for Davis Pullman to tell the members more about the East Valley Institute of Technology or EVIT. Students in area high schools can elect to attend EVIT (they spend 1/2 day at their HS and 1/2 day or 2,5 hours at EVIT). EVIT offers students tuition free, industry standard, accreditation, and licensing., “hands-on” learning in an array of career and technical vocations, 2 out of 3 EVIT students go on to college for advanced Career and Technical Education or CTE, and teachers are chosen from within their field of industry and use their firsthand personal experience to train students for future careers.
EVIT has 2 campuses in Mesa—the original at Main and Dobson which began in the mid-1990’s offering 30 programs and EVIT East located on Power Road south of Williams Field which offers 8 programs: veterinary assisting, aviation, engineering, nursing assistant, medical assistant, Anatomy and Physiology, and most recently, Behavioral Health.

EVIT offers tours of their facilities every Tuesday 1 PM if anyone may be interested to learn more. EVIT is a partnership with the area high schools to offer EVIT training as elective credit at their home high school. When Pullman visits High Schools to Recruit, he often shows them a picture. He meets with interested students to assess their various interests and to gauge their passions.
They offer certificates for their vocational training. They are strict in checking a prospective student’s attendance, discipline history, confirm a 2.0 to 2.5 GPA and assess for aptitudes. During the Q and A with members, Pullman said the most popular programs at EVIT are Veterinary Assisting, Criminal Justice, Industrial Machining, HVAC and Welding. If a career is not available or they walk into a counselor and there is nothing that interests the student, often they might create a program if enough demand exists, such as Behavioral Health.
EVIT also offers Adult Education —there is a tuition price and financial aid that is available. Some adults attend in the evening and some choose to attend during the day with the HS students. Thanks to David Pullman for educating us more about EVIT and more appreciate the Student of the Month Partnership we have established.
